About that little annoying 'update' yesterday Nov. 10th, 2009 @ 12:42 pm
[info]concordantnexus, posting in [info]worldofwarcraft
Only noticed it late tonight, but no matter how hard I try, I can't log in to my two Battle.net linked WoW accounts at the same time. In fact the second copy of WoW just refuses to load up at all.

What the heck Blizzard, one would think that you would *want* me to pay you 2 subscriptions per month, rather than one or none?

I checked with others on Ghostlands trade chat last night and they reported the same issue. Has anyone on other servers had the same problem?

It made me laugh. Nov. 10th, 2009 @ 12:59 pm

We're really relaxing into this stupid project, now we are halfway through the run. Despite the stress and the writing challenge we do have a lot of fun putting it together. It really is an excellent team of talented and easy going people and there are no twats to have to deal with.

Even on a weekend journalists are contacting me asking me to discuss offensiveness in comedy and whether things have gone too far either from the comedian's or the complainer's point of view. Plenty of other comics are clearly being asked the same thing or thinking about it at least David Mitchell wrote this article for the Observer and yesterday Shazia Mirza's excellent article about this subject was in the Guardian.

Grumble Nov. 9th, 2009 @ 10:56 pm

Today I discovered just how "emergency" my laptop is for purposes of playing WoW. I either need a more powerful laptop, or I need to get my monitor fixed on my desktop. Or both.

So, turning this from a mere cry for sympathy into a question that some people may be interested in, "What are the worst conditions you've put up with to play?" There has to be someone out there who's got worse than my laptop with integrated video and what seemed like a good amount of memory at the time.

My girlfriend and I both just tried to log in and got a downloading update screen, its going slow so its not some tiny client update. Anyone? I know people who are logged on right now.... Halp

*Edit: I successfully downloaded the "patch" and everything is up and running again. So Im not sure what to say, Im just glad it went down without a hitch.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was Us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things. SP spell rotation Nov. 9th, 2009 @ 03:26 pm
[info]rio, posting in [info]worldofwarcraft
So we were doing Sarth 3d today and I felt I was not pulling my weight dps wise...among others, but i'm working on my failings right now :)....I always felt SP's have such a slow start...dot dot cast that do that, then start MF'ing.

I'm looking for some opinions on spell rotations. Do you even use SW:D? etc etc. I'm off to work, so I can start reading up on this when I get back later.

Thanks.

Yes.

I know I'm a Holy Priest. I know I'm wearing a Shadow Priest belt, and don't NEED the hit. But if you didn't notice from the fact that the rest of my gear is a hodgepodge of random blues and purples, I am what you might call a "fresh eighty". The belt that dropped was a considerable upgrade from the mid-70s belt I had before, +hit or not.

Trust me, I'm more than capable of healing your Heroic UK run even with one item giving me 38 hit. I'm more than aware of how my class and spec work. The fact that I healed your sorry ass through the first two bosses wasn't enough of an indication?

No love,
Cy

Up early and feeling a bit spaced out to head down to 6Music to sit in on the Adam and Joe show with my colleague Andrew Collings. This was quite a coup for us and a hopeful sign that we might be able to get more paid work as a team because of or in spite of our childish podcast. That it's taken over 4 days of talking crap to each other for free (mainly) in my attic to get to this point perhaps shows the value of hard work and perseverance or maybe pervaverance.

My great-neice's birthday is coming up in a week's time. Instead of the usual 'educational' present, I decided to spoil her with some Posh.

I've already knitted a lacy scarf in this yarn and had enough over to do fine, 2ply version of Posh Lace. The yarn is a silk and merino blend in the colourway 'Coquette'

MWNN is taking presents over to Dublin today. He's flying out to take part in the ceremony to inter his Mother's ashes in his Father's grave on what would have been Ma's 100th birthday on 11th.

More spam bot signatures Nov. 7th, 2009 @ 06:04 pm
[info]fanf

There's another spam bot heuristic which is the exact complement to the one described in my prevous post. The idea is to keep rack of how many different HELO domains an SMTP client uses.

  defer
    message = Probable spam bot HELO varies between $sender_rate domains
    # whitelist checks go here
    ratelimit = 2.2 / 1w / per_conn / strict \
      / unique=$sender_helo_name / $sender_host_address

This is mostly the same as the code in my previous post, but the lookup key is the client's IP address, and we only increase the measured rate if the client uses a different unique HELO domain.

This check also works very well at detecting spam bots. When testing it I noticed that one particular bot likes to use a HELO domain consisting entirely of random upper-case letters, and it only talks to one of our servers with the lowest IP address. So I added a specific (cheaper) check to deal with it. This causes the bot to go away, and legitimate senders will retry with a different server.

  defer
    message = Probable spam bot HELO - please try another server
    condition = ${if and{{ eq{$primary_hostname}{ppsw-0.csi.cam.ac.uk} } \
                              { match{$sender_helo_name}{^[A-Z]+\$} }} }

There is a small risk of false positives with the variable HELO domain test. Some outgoing mail server clusters are behind a NAT, so we see HELO domains from multiple servers coming from the same IP address. I also found a number of false positives for the popular HELO domain check (most prominently rediffmail.com and easyjet.com). The way I'm dealing with them (which I hope will work in the long term) is as follows.

For the popular HELO domain check described in my previous post, I maintain a lookup table of legitimate HELO domains that trigger the check. The following replaces the hard-coded check for localhost.localdomain that appears in my previous entry.

    condition = ${if !match_domain{$sender_helo_name}{cdb;DB/helo_ok.cdb} }

As well as allowing through clients whose HELO domain can be verified, I now also check dnswl.org for well-known legitimate senders, and I maintain a table of sending hosts that slip through the other checks.

  ! verify   = helo
  ! hosts    = +helo_ok
  ! dnslists = list.dnswl.org

To avoid problems with false positives, my anti-spam-bot checks return a temporary error code ("defer" in Exim-speak instead of "deny"). I then have a nightly audit script which looks for hosts that appear to be repeatedly retrying a messages and which should be added to my whitelist tables. It might be possible to automate this table maintenance, again using the ratelimit feature, but I expect that will require a bit more experience to determine the right thresholds.

Frack me! Thanks to Andrew Collings I have bought the box set of Battlestar Galactica (the latest incarnation) and rather than going to the gym or doing some work on AIOTM as I had intended I stayed in all afternoon and got stuck in. It's too early to call, but I think I am going to enjoy this, but as I am slowly working my way through all 5 seasons of the Wire as well I might have to spend most of what remains of the decade watching box sets. Ah well, it beats working.

Even the most ability-heavy character could run raids with this mouse.

I can just see someone getting one, mapping buttons, and just sitting back and going at it. It's a very scary mouse.

We had a visitor in the garden yesterday. The black squirrel is relatively common in this part of Hertfordshire but it's the first year they have started coming into the garden. I took the shot through the conservatory window which is in need of a bit of a clean, hence the 'smoky' smear. The light was very dim and I didn't have time to change to the big lense on my camera. This is a cropped version of the original.
